About this service

How does addiction counselling help?

Addiction is rarely only about the substance. Stress, trauma, relationships, mental health and habits all play a part. Counselling helps a person understand why they use, what sets off cravings and how to respond differently, so that recovery rests on more than willpower.

At Nidaan Nasha Mukti Kendra in Bhopal, certified addiction counsellors work with each patient one to one and in groups to identify triggers, change unhelpful thinking and develop healthy coping strategies. Group sessions add community support and the comfort of knowing you are not alone.

FAQ

Addiction counselling: frequently asked questions

Clear answers to what patients and families ask us most about counselling.

What is addiction counselling?

Addiction counselling is a talking therapy in which a trained counsellor helps a person understand why they use alcohol or drugs, recognise what triggers cravings and develop healthier ways of coping. It is a core part of lasting recovery.

What is CBT and how does it help with addiction?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) looks at the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. In addiction treatment it helps people spot unhelpful thinking, manage cravings and replace substance use with healthier responses. It is one of the most widely used therapies for addiction.

What happens in the first counselling session?

The counsellor listens to your story, asks about your substance use, health and family, and discusses your goals. There is no judgement. Together you agree how to work, and the counsellor explains what to expect from the sessions that follow.

What is the difference between individual and group counselling?

Individual sessions are private, one-to-one conversations focused on your own history and goals. Group sessions bring patients together with a counsellor to share experiences, learn from each other and feel less alone. Most people benefit from both.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. We understand how sensitive addiction is. Communications, records and treatment are strictly protected, and we do not share information without your explicit consent.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no standard number. It depends on the person, the substance and how recovery is going. Your counsellor reviews progress regularly and adjusts the plan, and counselling can continue through aftercare.

Can counselling help if I also feel anxious, low or have past trauma?

Often, yes. Many people with addiction also struggle with anxiety, low mood or painful past experiences. Our counsellors use trauma-informed care and look at the whole person. Where needed, our doctors can advise on the medical side of your care.

Can my family join counselling?

Yes. Family counselling is part of our programme because relatives are an important part of recovery. See our family therapy page, or call us to arrange it.

In a medical emergency (unconsciousness, seizures, severe confusion or breathing trouble), call 112 first, then contact us.
