About this service
What is the 12-step recovery program?
The 12-step model is a structured, peer-based approach to recovery. It began with Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935 and is now used around the world for alcohol, drug and behavioural addictions. People work through twelve steps, from admitting the problem to making amends and building a new way of life, supported by others who truly understand.
At Nidaan Nasha Mukti Kendra in Bhopal, trained facilitators guide each patient through the steps alongside medical treatment and counselling. The program addresses the physical, mental and spiritual sides of addiction, and gives patients a community they can keep leaning on long after they leave the centre.

FAQ
12-step program: frequently asked questions
Clear answers to what patients and families ask us most about the 12-step program.
What is the 12-step recovery program?
The 12-step program is a structured, peer-based approach to recovery. It began with Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935 and is now used worldwide for alcohol, drug and behavioural addictions. People work through twelve steps, from admitting the problem to making amends and building a new way of life, with the support of others in recovery.
Is the 12-step program religious?
No. The steps refer to a “higher power”, but each person is free to understand that in their own way, whether religious, spiritual or simply the support of the group. The program is not tied to any one religion.
Does the 12-step program work for drug addiction as well as alcohol?
Yes. The model was first developed for alcohol and has since been adapted for drugs and other dependencies, for example through Narcotics Anonymous. At Nidaan, our facilitators use it for alcohol, drug and behavioural addictions.
What is a sponsor?
A sponsor is someone further along in recovery who offers guidance, encouragement and accountability between meetings. Our sponsorship program helps patients build this kind of relationship, which many people value long after they leave the centre.
Is the 12-step program enough on its own?
For most people it works best alongside other treatment. Medical detox deals with withdrawal safely, counselling addresses the underlying causes, and the 12-step program provides ongoing community support. At Nidaan these are combined in a single plan.
How long does the 12-step program take?
There is no fixed timetable. Patients work through the steps at their own pace, and many people keep attending meetings for years because recovery is an ongoing process. Our facilitators help each patient decide what pace is right.
Can my family take part?
Families are welcome to be involved through our family therapy programme, and separate fellowships such as Al-Anon exist for relatives of people with addiction. Call us and we will explain the options.
